ANNUAL DINNER & PRESENTATION EVENING

November 2008

Royal Dean Forest Cycling Club's Annual Awards Dinner was held last weekend at the Courtfield Arms in Lydbrook to celebrate and reflect on the 2008 season, probably the most eventful and successful season in the Clubs 58 year history. Chairman Matt Heaman opened proceedings welcoming friends from Glos Velo, a cycling fellowship also based in the Forest, Ross & District Cycling Club and Newport Phoenix Cycling Club, congratulating Club members Joanne Parry & Ben Oliver and Jenny Hanger & Martin Green on their marriage this year, before reflecting on the tragic loss of two club members Lindsay Venner and Tim Watson.

Matt introduced this years star special guest Michael "Dr Hutch" Hutchinson to the 86 diners who was to assist presenting the trophies to their recipients and add more than a little mirth to the proceedings in his Northern Irish Belfast brogue.

Michael Hutchinson

Matt prescied the 2008 season emphasising how the Club and cycling scene locally continues to go from strength to strength and how much he is looking forward to 2009 as the Beijing effect is still rippling through the cycling world especially poignant as the British team won all before them at Manchester in the World Cup series event last weekend.

Before beginning to dish out the silverware "Dr Hutch" regaled the assembled throng with many anecdotes from his years as a Time Trial Champion and also his "failed" attempt at the World Hour Record before conducting a question & answer session from the floor.

They say "the cream always rises to the top" that was certainly true of the 2008 Season with senior staesman and now muti-titled Welsh Champion Bob Parry scooping 7 of the awards a feat surpassing that of his son Colin in previous seasons , it was a matter of great amusement as Bob was introduced as Colin's older brother!!

ANNUAL DINNER & PRIZE GIVING 2004

Picture 1 Picture 2 picture 3 Picture 4 Picture 5
The Annual Prize Giving 2004 of the Royal Dean Forest Cycling Club was well attended at the end of a keenly contested year of competition with lots of new riders coming into prominence.

Josie Luckins whose speciality is in fact triathlon took both the 10 mile Time Trial Trophy and Ladies Best All Rounder.

Andrew Jones continues his awesome year by taking five trophies Junior 10 mile Time Trial with a time of 26mins 03secs, Junior 10 mile series with an overall time of 2hr 12min 15secs, Junior 25 mile Time Trial 1hr 5mins 52sec, Junior Hill Climb (Speech House) in 4mins 33secs and the Club Road Race Trophy for his efforts in the Castle Coombe series.

Veterans Best All Rounder this year was club stalwart Lindsay Venner who also took the Senior Hill Climb (Speech House) award with a time of 4mins 36secs. Lindsay came top in the Club Best All Rounder Group 1 competition after a thrilling year long battle with John Moth, however John had some compensation by taking this years most improved rider.

Andrew Jones took the Group 2 trophy in the same Club Best All Rounder competition with Josie Luckins taking Group 3.

John Beard became this years fast man of the club by taking the Time Trial awards for 10 mile (23mins 54secs), 25mile (57mins 17secs), 50 mile (2hr 0mins 31secs) with John Moth getting in on the act with a superb performance in the Welsh 12 hour TT Championship (229.7 miles) enabling him to take the Club's 12 hour award.

The Clubman of the year award this year went jointly to Ian and Joan Spencer for their sterling work in organising this years competition calendar.

The Audax Trophy again went to long distance veteran Trevor Hyde of Newent whose year was not all it might have due to an accident half way through the year.

The Presidents Cup was this year taken by new fast man Jonathan Batts of Whitecroft in a time 51mins 7secs for the 19 Mile Close Turf circuit.  Jon also led home the Royal Dean Forest team in the tri club Vintage Tankard against Ross on Wye and Newport cycling clubs bringing the trophy back to the Forest for the first time in many years.

Matthew Heaman predictably took the new Track Racing Trophy for racing at Newport Velodrome.

The trophy for the most embarrassing incident involving a Forest rider went to Graham Carter but Graham would probably prefer not to expand on this. However the incident was explained euphemistically and in depth by Matt Heaman the Clubs Chairman.

Ross riders have traditionally taken part in the Forest Clubs time trials and this year Paul Stevens took the Trophy for the most frequent Ross rider.

The evening was brought to a close by Matt Heaman who said the club was going from strength to strength with the membership now up to more than 50 members.
